Ashley's New Life in The City

Ashley is from the country-she lived the country life ever since she was born. But, things changed when she was eighteen years old…

Ashley was forced to live on New York, in the city and find a new home, new career and new everything. Life gets harder and harder but soon…Ashley finds things more important than the series of her life and others…

So, your name is Ashley?" Asked the register. "Yes," said Ashley. The register frowned and looked up at Ashley. "Your account has been expired. Sorry. The job is no longer up for offer," he said while he shuffled over Ashley's papers. Ashley sighed in frustration. She cupped her hands over her heads and groaned. "Who's taken it?" she asked with curiosity. The register scanned his eyes through the computer. "Miranda Tinsel Higgins." He said finally. Ashley sighed. "What do I do now?" she asked. "Um, we have an open space for you-it, ur, helping people who can't read, read or write." He continued. Ashley looked at him in disbelief. "But I…I am definitely not a tutor, you see. I can never explain very well and all…" But Ashley got cut off.

"Well, that is the only job available at the moment. You can either have the job or nothing," he said sternly. Ashley looked at the time. It was almost lunch. "Ok, then I will be a tutor to people who can't read," she said frostily. The register nodded and gave her a new pile of folders and files. "Your first student is Miss. Groundee on…Monday. At eleven in the morning. Here is Miss. Groundee's address and phone number. And email. You can contact her by them," he continued. He slipped three slips of paper into Ashley's files. "So, three classes a week?" she asked, furrowing a brow. "Yes," the register said. "Now, please, Ashley. My name is Timmy. But call me Tim. I need to go back to work!" he finished. Ashley left the building and looked at the slips. She was supposed to be teaching Miss. Groundee at North Caroline. Three times a week. Ashley sighed. She knew it was hard teaching someone who can't read. But, as long as she got the money, that was that.

Chapter 3

Ashley was walking along the footpath of Blueberry Roads. It was a cold, frosty morning. Ashley was wearing new long, skinny blue jeans she ordered online with a few extra savings. She was wearing a pink dress shirt with mature-looking cute black buttons. I hope this lesson is good, she thought. She was hoping she'd look mature enough. She was carrying a big bag of copy-right books. And a stack of children's handwriting books for beginners. She was sure Mrs. Groundee could do a few letters…she hoped.

When Ashley reached the door of Mrs. Groundee's house, she took a deep breath and knocked. A maid servant opened the door. "In here," she said, letting Ashley in. Ashley walked in frostily. She looked around the room. There were old and dull pictures on the wall. Nothing very cheerful and bright, actually. Except for a microscope-this had the outlines of the sun's morning color. Ashley, with curiosity, picked up the microscope and took a good look at it. It was dusty and ever so rusty.

"Who the bloody hell are you?"

As voice jolted behind Ashley. Ashley jumped and dropped the microscope and her shoulder bag, which was full of copy-right books for her first pupil. There was a woman…about twenty years of age with unruly dark hair and dashing green eyes-which obviously caught attention. "Oh…sorry. I was just looking at that. I love microscopes…in fact, I am thinking of placing a collection of microscopes at home. But sadly, I only have a few microscopes at home…" Ashley trailed off. She didn't realize that the woman was glaring angrily at her. "Well, did you answer my question? Who are you?" She demanded. Ashley took time to answer the woman's unruly question. Ashley stared at the woman. She was wearing a fine, purple violet ball gown dress. Her dark hair was tied in a brief bun. Her lips were pressed into a short line. Her alien green eyes were fixed on Ashley, waiting for an answer. "Oh. I'm terribly sorry! I am Miss. Ashley Reality. Excuse me, please," said Ashley politely.

"What are you here for?" the woman asked.

"Excuse me!" said Ashley sternly. "I am your teacher. You don't know how to read or write, eh? Well, I am teaching you to do that three times a week. Two hours straight. Miss. Oldenburg is engaging me too." Continued Ashley. The woman raised an, thin, perfect eyebrow. "Well. I am Groundee. But, I don't know you. You could be putting me in hostage for all I know. You could have a gun in that bag of yours. I couldn't trust you in a million years!" said Groundee.

"Oh really?" said Ashley hurtfully. Two whole days of her life has gone wrong. "Look-I got books here." She finished, bending down to pick up the copy-right books on the polished ice floor. She showed Groundee all her copy-righted books in progress. Groundee eyes suddenly lifted up. "I don't know you. Now, leave me alone! I got my own business here. My husband better get back…"
"Wait," said Ashley before she could get shooed out. "You got a boyfriend? But your certificate says nothing about your husband or boyfriend. You see, your gold certificate doesn't say anything about your boyfriend,"

"Is that really any of your business?" retorted Groundee sniffly. "No it isn't," answered Ashley. "But now I have decided that it is," she finished.


 

Chapter One

"I'm late…Omigod…I'm late…" Ashley was puffing as she walked through the center. It was the first day of her journalist job and she was already late! She hated walking with black heeled shoes. The business clothes were uncomfy. She had to becareful she wouldn't trip on the polished floor. Finally, with her files and folders all crumpled by her chest, she found the office door she was supposed to go to. "Room 19…Room 19…yes…" Ashley flipped her blonde hair back with her free hand. (The other hand was clutching to her folders and files.) Then, she took a deep breath and pushed through the door. There, inside was a quite plump woman with red curly hair, on an office desk, looking through papers and newspapers. "Yes, what is your business?" the plump woman said. Ashley then saw it-beside the plump woman were two girls. The one with the deepest brown hair looked up and smiled at her. She had deep green eyes and pale skin. The girl next to her, with thin white blonde hair and tanned face, just scowled at her. "I…um...I was offered a job as a journalist here." Murmured Ashley. "Well, where's your card, then?" The plump woman said. She tipped her glasses on her nose slightly and looked at Ashley. The girl with the white blonde hair smirked. "Yeah, anyone could've put up a stunt like that," The girl with the white blonde hair walked like a model up to Ashley and sighed smartly. The plump woman popped in. "Miranda, come back here! Let Ashley talk." She said. Miranda, who was the girl with white blonde hair, gazed at Ashley for a while. Ashley held on to her folders and flies. "Look, Mrs. Higgins-ur, Ashley isn't really in correct uniform. I mean, there's a bit of hay on her uniform suit. And, her hair is messy on the side and isn't she supposed to have higher heeled shoes than that?" Miranda pointed out serenely. The plump woman, who turned out to be Mrs. Higgins-probably saw Miranda's point. "Hmm…Yes, Miranda. Anyone could pull out a stunt like that-pretending to be a journalist when they are not signed up. Go away, whatever you name is!" Mrs. Higgins declared. Ashley felt hurt and mad. Well, more hurt than mad! She was offered a job here! And Miranda was really mean! "I-I…I," stammered Ashley. "Well, what are you waiting for? Shoo!" She Mrs. Higgins. Ashley smiled and pretended to check her nails. Which were perfect; of course? Now, Ashley's world seemed full of embarrassment and sadness. The girl with the deepest green jet eyes, who turned out to be called Cammeira, sighed melcolney. Ashley just looked down at her files and calmly as she could muster, checked her folders that she has the right room. Room 19. It said again. Ashley cleared her throat then looked up at Miranda, Mrs. Higgins and Cammeira and spoke up. "Look, I am in the correct room and I was offered a job as a journalist here at Regal States last Sunday," started Ashley. Then, she tilted her head over to Miranda, who was smirked and scowling. At Ashley, of course. "And I am a journalist. I mean, you see-they wanted me to be a journalist to work here at Regal States last Sunday." Finished Ashley gently. First, was Miranda to speak up in full passion. She pointed her manicured hot pink nails at Ashley. Mrs. Higgins' was quiet for a moment, checking papers or wiping her glasses. "Liar! We hardly know you-don't we, Mrs. Higgins? She must be a spy! I mean, look at her, grandmother! She is in a disguise! Call the FBI quick grannie!" cried Miranda, scow fully. Ashley gasped and dropped her files and folders. Mrs. Higgins leaped out of her chair and demanded silence. "You, girl! How dare you come in and interrupt Miranda and Cammie's career day! You had no right! No right AT ALL!!! We are calling the manager, Tim. Then Tim will call the FBI…"

"Shut your pan!" Ashley breathed. She had never used this phrase. Immendiantly, everyone in the office room in Room 19-Mrs. Higgins, Cammie and Miranda all shut up. "Listen," said Ashley. She had never been this loud in her life before. "First of all to clear this entire up-I am not a spy-certainly not. And, Miranda and Higgins', I think you should be ashamed for yourself since you accused me of being a spy when you don't know my story…" Ashley paused and looked around the room. Everyone was listening-even bigmouth Miranda. "So, what is your story?" asked Cammie suddenly. Ashley sighed. Then she bent down to pick up her files and folders. Then, without a second glance, she turned around and pushed the door open and walked back outside the building.

She could not tell anyone her preview life. It was too embarrassing. She fluffed out of the office buildings, still with the folders and flies against her chest. What was she going to do now? The city was very busy. There were cars all over on streets. Now, everything in life just seemed plain, old dull (Or should she say 'ole'?)

Chapter 2

"You can if you like. But you hardly know me, anyway," answered Ashley.

"OK. I am a Mrs. Groundee Petite. Not a miss. I arranged a secret marriage with Mr. Giovanni Smith. I had to. It was part of the law." Started Groundee, sitting down on an expensive couch. She told her maid to go make a cup of tea. Ashley was gobsmacked, as she presumed. "What law?" Ashley asked.

"The law." Was all Groundee said. Ashley was goggling. The more she thought about it, the more she goggled. "I…Look. That must be a fib. I have your Gold Certificate-here," Ashley opened a 'Spelling & Grammar" Copy-righted book and tossed out Groundee's Gold Certificate. Groundee glanced one glance at it. Ashley just stood next to her, with her arms folded, staring at Groundee, rudely because all Groundee could do was tell fat fibs to her teacher. The Gold Certificate of Groundee said:

After reading, Groundee gave out a tiny small laugh.

"What is so funny?" asked Ashley impatiently. "Anyway, I should care about these stories you tell because I am your teacher. Shouldn't we move on?" Groundee shook her head and calmed herself down. "Look-this certificate is a Nooby. It's fake. But the people do not know that it is fake. I am married but the people do not know." She said.

"I'd ought to know. I am your teacher!"

"Might've."

Ashley was getting furious. But she controlled it. "Listen, shouldn't we start your lesson? After all, Miss. Oldenburg is paying me too."
"How much?" asked Groundee.

"Forty eight dollars an hour. Now, I will get the books out." Ashley summarized. There were still some books on the polished floor and Ashley bent down to pick them up. She knew Groundee kept going on signing things with a X. Ashley was determined to tell Groundee she can't go on signing things with a X.

"O.k…first, we will start with…let's see, the alphabet-that's nice and easy. This one is A…and this one is B…" Ashley picked up a Children Learning Their ABC's Book. She knew Groundee was not a child but she'd ought to learn. After the first fifteen minutes, Groundee knew half of her alphabet. "Ok, now since you have learnt half of the alphabet, you can start signing things with your natural signature." Said Ashley.

"Hm. Hm." Grumbled Groundee. She sipped her cup of tea and stared at Ashley's books. Then, she stood up and went to a cupboard and opened it. Ashley could see that the cupboard was full of board games. "Here-can you play Monopoly? Or how 'bout this one? I forgot what it is called…" Groundee stacked a pile of board games on top of her learning books. Ashley breathed in and out. "Well, we could read the instructions but shouldn't I'd ought to teach you the colors? After all, that's what I am here for," Ashley said patiently, trying to keep her mood light. Groundee stared at her. "Hey, let's take a little break and you tell me a little about you. I'd ought to know things about my tutor," sighed Groundee frostily.

Ashley slumped down on the expensive Queen Coach and sighed quietly. "Ok, well-I was home-schooled. My parents invited a home tutor to home-school me. When I was thirteen, my mum died of cancer and heart disease. I was still home-schooled then. My dad was caught with malaria and he went to gaol then he died there for rats' virus. I lived with my Aunt and Uncle up till sixteen then we were in exile. When we were in exile, we had to move here. And now, that's all I'm going to say." Said Ashley.

Groundee was quiet as first. "Alright then. Well, I have learnt half of my alphabet, haven't I?" she retorted. Ashley nodded and tossed the board games back in the cupboards. "Right," she said. "Groundee-we must now learn the colors. Here," Soon, after thirty minutes, they had learnt the five colors: PINK, YELLOW, RED, and BLUE AND GREEN. "Ok, this is all for today's lesson." Said Ashley cheerfully. Groundee shrugged and glanced at Ashley. "Promise one thing-never tell anyone that I am…you know what," Groundee smiled. Ashley nodded. She picked up her books then put them in her shoulder bag then scurried out the door.

Ashley's part-time job was a waitress. She did come to New York to be a journalist but she also was a waitress. She made an appointment to serve at The Jazzy Blue Restaurant. Mr. Olive, the manager of The Jazzy Blue was looking into Ashley. Not literally, though. Olive was first expecting Ashley to be snobby, in fact.
"Hi, my name Ashley. I-I was appointed to the Jazzy Blue." Stammered Ashley. "Of course," Olive said. He gave Ashley a note-pad and a waitress apron to wear and pushed her out the door. "Hey!" gasped Ashley. Then, when she looked up-it was the Jazzy Blue Restaurant. The place was filled with chairs, tables and neat little pepper and salt shakers on each table. There were so many people in the room! Waiting to be served, as Ashley thought. Ashley tied her blond hair in a neat bun and sighed. Where to start? She thought. Two girls, about sixteen of age were sitting on the nearest table. "Excuse me, waiter!" The first girl said. She had the fakest red hair Ashley had ever seen. "Like, where is our order?" the second girl snapped. She had the most bangles on her right hand and unruly brunette hair. "Oh. Yes, sorry! Um, yes, what would you like?" asked Ashley softly.

"Thank you for asking!" said the one with the most bangles.

"I would like a crouton soup with jelly custard. I would also like a gel lime Jell-O drink-served icy in thermos-if possible and it has to be in cups. Later, I will order some dessert-which I want is chocolate strawberry vanilla ice cream with sprinkles and is fat free." She the first girl. The second girl glanced at Ashley's badge. "Ashley," they chimed rudely. Ashley was having trouble remembering what they had ordered. "Ok, well. Anything else?" she asked, trying to keep her mood as light as possible.

"Yes, in fact. My name is Amy," said the one in brunette hair. "And this is Anita. Since we know your name…Ashley…anyways, I would like tomato soup with jelly custard, but only a bit. I would also like a banana smoothie-with a few ice cubes in it. I will like my dessert now, thanks. Which is a fat free yogurt?"

Ashley's brain was having a racket. She ordered all of the food up in just 10 minutes. By the end of the day, which was dawn, Ashley was practically panting.

"Just as hope you were going well on your first day."

A voice jolted up behind her as she reached up to get her coat. Ashley almost dropped her coat. She spun around and saw who was there. It was Olive, the manager of The Jazzy Blue Restaurant. Ashley furrowed an eyebrow. "Oh, yeah. I forgot to tell you that you are supposed to pay me…I think it was…sixty five dollars for this half time." Said Ashley politely. Olive nodded and handed her over the cash. "Well, the store is closing now. Your job starts again next week," he smiled.

Chapter

It was a cold, frosty Wednesday and it was snowing. Snowing, snowing, and snowing in the towns of London. Ashley was going walking along the streets of Blueberry Road, just like she always does every three times a week to teach Groundee how to read and write. She had a bag full of copy-right books and as always, the Children's Book-Volume One-Teaching them to Read and Write. Ashley was flabbergasted from last time she went to Groundee's house. She can't believe that woman was secretly married and was as rich as a mansion bloke, like a real mansion bloke, to even afford maids to work in her mansion. Ashley rang the doorbell. As usual, a maid opened it. She frowned so hard as if she was trying to remember when she had seen Ashley, in that matter of fact. "I need to speak with Groundee," retorted Ashley, trying to keep her voice steady. It was very cold. Especially since she was standing outside of a doorstep, cold in the snow when one maid was really and truly comfortable in Groundee's mansion with warm air heaters. "Sorry, Groundee is…busy. Today. Come back another day," said the maid frostily, about to close the polished door but Ashley stopped her just in time. "No," said Ashley strongly, her cold voice clearing out. "I must go in. I have to teach her to read and write. Excuse me, please." Ashley's voice was getting impatient. The maid's face was also going sour-looking. "No. I am her maid. You are nothing. I'm sorry, please leave us in peace." The maid spat. Ashley was getting a bit annoyed. "Listen, if you won't let me in or I will write a complaint to Groundee later on in the day," she suggested quickly.

The maid opened the door widely and let Ashley in as quickly as possible. Ashley stepped in frostily. Again, there was like last week, she found that there were new children board games and lots of microscopes. In fact, a full line of them on the shelves. There, Ashley saw Groundee-with a man with strong, dark blonde hair and a thick black business coat. He was sitting on an expensive looking crème colored stool, eating a piece of nutcrackers, and as Ashley suspected, poshly. And then she saw IT: A ring on his finger! A matching golden ring on Groundee's finger! Ashley froze for a minute and almost dropped her books. "That's him…isn't it, Groundee?" stammered Ashley. Next to the man was Groundee, hair also in a black bun and eyebrows thinly plucked. She was wearing a ball gown, again. They were sitting next to eachother. "Ashley!" she gasped, jumping out of her chair. "What are you doing here?" she breathed. Her nostrils were flaking, even though she remembered last time Ashley came, she had told Ashley her secret. The man next to Groundee, jumped up in tragedy. He turned to Groundee.

"I told you, Groundee-never to tell anyone about this!" He yelled. Groundee soon, had this expression on her face-an expression Ashley had never seen before. Groundee stared at the man, whose name turned out to be Jim. "Jim…I'm sorry. Look, this is Ashley-my tutor. She is going to teach me how to read and write. You see, Ashley is trustworthy, Jim. Please, can you just trust her? She won't tell anyone, will you, Ash?" said Groundee briskly, tugging tightly on her bright yellow ball gown.

"No, I will never,"

"That's settled then-Ashley, meet my secret boyfriend-Jim. Jim Thomas." Said Groundee, smiling a bit. Though, her bottom lip was put into a thin line.

Ashley walked a few steps forward to shake the posh man's hand. He looked serious and posh at the same time. There was something that told Ashley about this man. Ashley looked down on what she was wearing- just a violet winter coat and white gloves and white pants. She hoped she looked posh-in Jim's affect. Ashley's blonde hair was all out-so she hoped Jim would accept how she looked.

"Um, Groundee? Our lesson? Oldenburg is paying me twice the much of regular prices. Shall we get back to work?" asked Ashley nervously. Groundee smiled a little bit but Ashley could see that Groundee was smiling between clenched teeth. "Yes, of course we can. I now can say the alphabet, since Ash taught me, eh, Jim?" she nudged Jim, who was staring into space.

"Please, may you call me Ashley? I don't like it when people call me Ash…it just sounds not right for me. I don't like it much how people call me Ash, you see. Thank you," said Ashley, starting to take a dollop of copy-right books out. Jim started to fidget. He started to really fidget. He stood up and walked straight out of Groundee's home mansion.

When it was time to start the lesson, Groundee started to force her maid to make coffee. "Ok, today we will start learning the numbers and how to write them. Now.."

Please, may you call me Ashley? I don't like it when people call me Ash…it just sounds not right for me. I don't like it much how people call me Ash, you see. Thank you," said Ashley, starting to take a dollop of copy-right books out. Jim started to fidget. He started to really fidget. He stood up and walked straight out of Groundee's home mansion.

When it was time to start the lesson, Groundee started to force her maid to make coffee. "Ok, today we will start learning the numbers and how to write them. Now.."

They started to learn the numbers. Now, Groundee knew how to count the numbers, 1, 2 , 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

"This is a great start," said Ashley cheerfully.

Ashley was walking along the footpath of Blueberry Roads. It was a cold, frosty morning. Ashley was wearing new long, skinny blue jeans she ordered online with a few extra savings. She was wearing a pink dress shirt with mature-looking cute black buttons. I hope this lesson is good, she thought. She was hoping she'd look mature enough. She was carrying a big bag of copy-right books. And a stack of children's handwriting books for beginners. She was sure Mrs. Groundee could do a few letters…she hoped.

When Ashley reached the door of Mrs. Groundee's house, she took a deep breath and knocked. A maid servant opened the door. "In here," she said, letting Ashley in. Ashley walked in frostily. She looked around the room. There were old and dull pictures on the wall. Nothing very cheerful and bright, actually. Except for a microscope-this had the outlines of the sun's morning color. Ashley, with curiosity, picked up the microscope and took a good look at it. It was dusty and ever so rusty.

"Who the bloody hell are you?"

As voice jolted behind Ashley. Ashley jumped and dropped the microscope and her shoulder bag, which was full of copy-right books for her first pupil. There was a woman…about twenty years of age with unruly dark hair and dashing green eyes-which obviously caught attention. "Oh…sorry. I was just looking at that. I love microscopes…in fact, I am thinking of placing a collection of microscopes at home. But sadly, I only have a few microscopes at home…" Ashley trailed off. She didn't realize that the woman was glaring angrily at her. "Well, did you answer my question? Who are you?" She demanded. Ashley took time to answer the woman's unruly question. Ashley stared at the woman. She was wearing a fine, purple violet ball gown dress. Her dark hair was tied in a brief bun. Her lips were pressed into a short line. Her alien green eyes were fixed on Ashley, waiting for an answer. "Oh. I'm terribly sorry! I am Miss. Ashley Reality. Excuse me, please," said Ashley politely.

"What are you here for?" the woman asked.

"Excuse me!" said Ashley sternly. "I am your teacher. You don't know how to read or write, eh? Well, I am teaching you to do that three times a week. Two hours straight. Miss. Oldenburg is paying me too." Continued Ashley. The woman raised an, thin, perfect eyebrow. "Well. I am Groundee. But, I don't know you. You could be putting me in hostage for all I know. You could have a gun in that bag of yours. I couldn't trust you in a million years!" said Groundee.

"Oh really?" said Ashley hurtfully. Two whole days of her life has gone wrong. "Look-I got books here." She finished, bending down to pick up the copy-right books on the polished ice floor. She showed Groundee all her copy-righted books in progress. Groundee eyes suddenly lifted up. "I don't know you. Now, leave me alone! I got my own business here.
