A Century of the Past II Role Plays
By Christine Wang
Haily: Hello? Can someone tell me why I am back here, in the past?
Haily (Stares up in the space.): (Sighs.)
Boy: Who are you?
Haily: I'm-
Boy (frowns): And why are you wandering around through the streets at this time?
Haily: Who do you think I am?
Boy (No answer.)
Haily: Well, I have been here once-and it was a great adventure but scary. I do not need to be here twice and I do not know how I got here again!
Boy: What's your name?
Haily: Haily.
Boy: I'm Andrew. My grandfather has just passed away and my family and I are taking up a funeral tomorrow, at dawn.
Haily: Okay.
Boy: Where do you come from? And what do you mean you've been here once or twice? Believe me, there have been lots of Lavenia citizens roaming around German.
Haily: I'm from the present, excuse me which is 2011. And I have been here once! But not in Germany, as you are telling me but in England.
Andrew (Gasping a little.): That's a different story. (Chuckles a bit.)
Haily (Glares at him.): Who do you think you are?
Andrew: Call me Drew. It's very late at night. Um, would you like to stay at my parent's cottage down by the woods?
Haily (Stiffly.): If you ask so.
Drew: Come then. My grandmother is making tea and porridge for a bit. To cool down from the Passover from her husband.
Haily: Lead the way.
End of Part I
Drew: My grandmother is sleeping.
Haily: Mm. Mm. Right.
Drew (Opens wooden door.): Sh….
Haily: Ouch. You stepped on my foot.
Drew: That's a nice petticoat dress you are wearing; checkered blue and white square ones-the kind my grandfather always liked. (Looked away sadly.)
Haily (Does nothing but a grunt.):
Drew: It's midnight…I'll blow out the candle.
Haily (Looks around the cottage. Eyes gazes on fireplace.):
Drew: I-
Cassie (In German): Drew? Drew? Is that you?
Drew (Whispers.): Yes. I think it is me.
(Girl with blonde petite hair in braids and petticoat.)
Cassie: Who is this?
Drew: Haily; we just met at the streets.
Cassie (Lowly.): Does mother know about this?
Drew: No.
Cassie: Is she German? (Stares at Haily's dark hair.)
Drew (Smiling. Turns to Haily. Whispers quietly.): Haily, this is my sister, Cassie. She is German like we all are. She speaks German and a bit of English. I'm sure you're not German as for your hair but are you Jewish?
Cassie (Glares.):
Haily (Croaks.): Um…yeah…I guess not…um…
Cassie (Hisses in English to Haily.): Is dat an arnswer?
Haily: It can be if it wants to be.
Drew (Hushes.): Shhhh….Come both of you, let's go outside and talk!
End of Part II
Haily: It is so cold out here.
Cassie (Demanding German Accent voice.): Dis is no time to lose, Harily. You Jewish or not?
Haily (Stares at shoes.):
a little girl with dark hair and blue eyes walking through Germany?
Cassie (Snaps in German.): He'll have her poisoned!
Haily: Um, to tell you the truth I am Jewish but I'm not all in their beliefs. I know where I am and I figured it all out. I learnt history about Adolf Hitler and his hatred toward Jews. And I don't even want to be here but I don't understand why I am here…
Cassie (Gasps.): Dis is betrayal!
Drew (Sniffing.): Haily our mother and father says we are never allowed to talk to Jews. Or go near them. Sorry Haily, but…we can't let you in German.
Cassie (Nodding.): You could get killed. (Walks back into cottage.)
Haily: Well, Drew. What can I do? Where can I go?
Drew: I don't know and I wish I could care but I can't. I'm not allowed. Bye, bye Haily. Sorry but we have to leave you. You must leave German before Hitler finds you. Goodbye and farewell. (Walks back to cottage and closes the door.)
Haily (Mouth hanging open.):
End of Part III
Coming soon! Part VI!
